13 Days of Self Care – Keep Your Promises
This is the 13 Days of Self Care. I have been inspired by a wall hanging I have in my home which gives 13 ideas to spoil yourself and value who you are… This is, in essence what Self Care is.
Day 8 of 13 – Keep Your Promises
Why is keeping your promises a good self care tip you might be asking? Keeping your promises says a lot about who you are. The concept may get you thinking about what’s important to you and what you value in your life.
Promise. What is the definition of promise? The Merriam-Webster online dictionary defines promise as: “a declaration that one will do or refrain from doing something specified.” i.e. ‘I promise to do the dishes after dinner’, this implies that there is no doubt it will happen. Or, ‘I promise to love you forever’, again, no doubt that this love will last a lifetime. As I consider the definition of promise and then how the word may be used, my thoughts are automatically drawn to the concept of integrity.
We usually think about integrity as doing what you say you’re going to do or staying true to what’s important to you. Dr Brené Brown defines integrity as “Choosing courage over comfort; choosing what is right over what is fun, fast, or easy; and choosing to practice our values rather than simply professing them.” If we think about what integrity is from that definition then we can start to see how keeping our promises is good for us.
It comes back to the idea of being courageous. Choosing courage over comfort often isn’t easy, but it is brave. Doing what is right over what is fun, fast and easy is courageous. Practicing our values and living in line with our values will also have moments where it is not easy or fun, but it is courageous and authentic.
So keeping our promises shows character and it shows courage. Being courageous is contagious and creates wholehearted and authentic people; something this world could use a lot more of.
When we are keeping our promises and doing what we said we would do, we are exercising what’s important to us (aka living in line with our values) which is putting ourselves first and valuing not only who we are but also what we stand for. When you live a courageous and authentic life, you begin to live a life that values you. A life lived where we feel valued is very rare, it’s also possible to achieve. One step at a time.
Take the steps and keep your promises.
You Are Worth It.
