It was a Tuesday night and I was about to begin presenting at a workshop introducing Self Care. One man said “I can’t wait for you to tell us that we all need to take a vacation and go sit on a cruise ship somewhere!” I smiled and said, “Self Care is about so much more than taking a holiday.”
If you’ve been led to believe that Self Care is about taking a well earned break and taking some holidays and then you come back to work and everyday life and you’ve “done” your self care for the next 6 months… then you’re not alone. I think there are many people who think that’s what Self Care is all about.

Ultimately Self Care is about you caring for you. Putting yourself on the list. When you put yourself on the list you are putting value on you.
“Self-Care just means putting yourself on the list. It means valuing yourself enough to know you need to spend time resting, setting boundaries, and engaging in activities that make you happy (or cared for), without feeling guilty.” – Lucille Zimmerman
When we value ourselves the rest needs to follow and often does naturally:
Spending time resting
Engaging in activities that make you happy
And doing it all without feeling guilty
Yes. It’s easier said than done. Many people who go on the journey of Self Care and learning to value themselves, take years to implement these elements into their daily lives. And, as humans, we still don’t always do it and we default to what we’ve always known and find easier.
Self Care is about Valuing You.
For me, learning this intellectually was one thing, living it out was a whole other lesson. It’s taken me almost 4 years before I’d really started believing that I am valued. If you’re skeptical – you’re not alone. If you want to value you – you’re not alone and you are welcome on the journey. It will be the best decision you ever make.
