13 Days of Self Care – Trust Your Instincts
This is the 13 Days of Self Care. I have been inspired by a wall hanging I have in my home which gives 13 ideas to spoil yourself and value who you are… This is, in essence what Self Care is.
Day 9 of 13 – Trust Your Instincts
Instincts are a powerful part of our being. You may have heard the saying ‘trust your gut’. This is otherwise known as instinct.
Instinct is about trusting yourself. You know that feeling or experience where you need to make a decision and you go to decide and then you second guess yourself? Well most times people often end up at the first thing they thought of or back to their first instinct.
We all have natural instincts about life, about people, about situations, about hard decisions.
Today’s self care tip is to Trust Your Instincts. Trust that you know yourself better than anyone else does.
We live in a time when there is so much research and everyone seems to have an opinion about everything. The fact is that in the end you are only accountable to you. You cannot ultimately make decisions for other people (yes, as a parent that is your role for a time). However, in adult-adult relationships, you are only responsible for you, for your decisions, for your beliefs, for your dreams, for your goals, for your life.
As you go about your day, trust your instincts. We have scenarios everyday that create opportunities for us to go with our head or our heart. When we follow our heart we are usually following our instincts. These scenarios could be anything from taking a certain way to the shops through to making a big decision at work or in your family. Trusting your instincts is proven to be accurate 90% of the time.
The challenge many of us have is that we are concerned about what people will think and say if we make a decision based on instinct. Is it wise? It is being mature? What if it’s the wrong decision? Life experience from thousands of years of humanity shows that even if our instincts are wrong 10% of the time, we will survive. The likelihood is that we will learn a valuable lesson from the experience.
So if you are in the middle of having to make a big and important decision or maybe it’s a small and important decision and you are confused about what to do? I encourage you to take a step back and ask yourself “what do I really want to do?” The answer is most likely to be what your first instinct was.
Go for it. Even if it turns out that it wasn’t the best decision… Remember…
You Are Worth It.
